Here’s one little piece of advice – don’t paint your walls before you finish your ceiling! I don’t know what I was thinking – I was originally going to install a drop ceiling, but I ended up dropping a 2X4 ceiling and installing drywall on it.

I have installed a drop ceiling before and it wasn’t too difficult.

Drop ceilings help soundproof a room – since the ceiling tiles aren’t in direct contact with the floor joists above, sound is not easily transmitted through the ceiling.

Drop ceilings are pretty simple to install.

Why didn’t I use a drop ceiling?

Finding black ceiling tiles and rails is not easy. You will most likely want a dark ceiling in your home theater room so light isn’t reflected from the wall sconces and the projector. I wanted to build a recessed shelf into my ceiling and install my projector in it – this would have been very difficult to almost impossible using ceiling tiles and a drop ceiling.

Drop a drywall ceiling below your ductwork

Luckily the center area of the ceiling didn’t have any ductwork running through it, so I planned my ceiling around that. I found the center of the ceiling (between the left and right wall) and ran a line along the ceiling.

Since I was going to use joist hangers for the new ceiling joists I was going to install, I needed something to install the joist hangers to. If I had some help building the ceiling, I would have probably built the ceiling in pieces on the floor and attached it to the nailers. Since I did the ceiling all on my own, joist hangers was the way to go – I could install the ceiling one board at a time.

The dropped ceiling was going to span from the joist hangers on the walls to these hangers that are attached to the floor joists above.

Insulating your Home Theater Ceiling

Insulation plays a key role in soundproofing your home theater ceiling. If in installed a regular drop ceiling, you can’t run insulation right above the tiles; however, you could insulate the cavities between the floor joists above the drop ceiling.

If you drop a 2×4 framed ceiling like I did, then you should definitely insulate it to soundproof the ceiling. I installed some insulation made for 2×6″ walls in my ceiling.

Building a shelf for your projector

After the ceiling was insulated, I had to finish the shelf for the projector before I drywalled the dropped part of the ceiling.

Installing drywall on your Home Theater Ceiling

Once all the ceiling framing was installed, I just had to install the drywall. If I could do everything over again, I would have framed in the theater room ceiling and had the professionals do the drywall.
