Advantage of Home Theater Sound

Home theater sound is playing a movie that’s encoded with the necessary formats to take advantage of your equipment. This is important because, regardless of the capabilities of your receiver, you can’t hear an audio format that isn’t present on the disc. For instance, a dvd that isn’t encoded with dts-es format can’t play that format, even if it’s supported by your receiver. Be sure to check your content source (such as the back of a dvd box) to determine the surround sound formats available for that particular movie or program. If you’ve followed these steps, you’re ready to sit in full cinematic bliss in your very own home movie theater. With great surround sound, you’ll be able to enjoy a movie with all of the benefits of the theater and none of the hassles. Admission is free; your couch is far more comfortable than a reclining seat with plastic arm rests; concessions are already paid for; and if you fall asleep before the credits roll, you can pick up where you left off at any time.

Home theater sound is processed by a piece of audio equipment called a receiver. The receiver converts the sound signal by splitting it up into channels for each individual speaker. Monaural sound comes from one speaker, while stereo sound comes from two. For surround sound to make the listener feel as if they are in the center of the sound, five speakers are needed. This type of surround sound is commonly called 5-channel (or a 5).

More advanced surround sound adds additional speakers (these are called 6. At minimum, you will need to purchase a 5-channel receiver for a home theater system. The sound from the receiver is reproduced by the speakers. A 5-channel home theater will have five surround speakers (front left, center, front right, back left, and back right) and a subwoofer. The role of the subwoofer is to produce the lowest tones, for ground shaking bass. The center channel speaker carries most of the voice audio, so it is mounted next to the screen.
